THE CREATION
In the time before man
animal people,
filled the earth.
But a huge monster
fell from the sky
terrible in size
and anger.
Inhaling the creatures
the world became quiet
Coyote, Itsaya'ya,
part trickster
part sage,
set off to save the animals
When he came
upon the monster
Coyote said,
"Inhale me,
You have eaten all the people
and I am lonely here."
And the monster inhaled like a fierce wind.
Inside the beast
Coyote cut out the monster's heart
with a stone knife.
And with the creature's last breath
the animals inside were blown,
tumbling,
turning,
twisting
to freedom.
Dance coyote, sing
They are saved.
Then Coyote carved up the monsters heart
and threw each piece ...
toward sunrise,
sunset,
toward warm,
and cold,
toward mountains,
and rivers
And where they landed
Indian Nations sprang up -
NARRATOR
But Fox said,
"Coyote,
you forgot people
for this most beautiful of all lands"
So Coyote squeezed the heart
and from the blood flowed
the Nimiipuu,
"the people"
small in number
but brave, strong and pure.
