CLARK
I search the country to the north
to find a river
to the ocean
but instead I see only
angry waters,
perilous cliffs,
treachery and turbulence.
We must go north by land.
LEWIS
I talk to Shoshonis
ask about a southern route
but it is only dry, parched desert
this time of year.
Sagebrush, black rock,
ten days without water or food
for man or horse.
We cannot survive.
We must go north by land.
CHORUS
We are lost
by water and by desert.
we will perish
We must go north.
Find the trail of the Indians,
Nez Perce
to reach the ocean.
Cameawait,
We must have horses
to cross the mountains,
We are lost
Cameawait, save us.
Sacajawea, intercede for us.
Lewis, promise them guns,
ammunition to come
anything for horses
to save our journey,
to get us through
these "immence ranges of high mountains"
Hurry,
The summer is late
The air is chilled
Get us horses,
Get us horses,
Without horses
We are lost. |
