CHORUS
At last the mountains
are behind us.
We move forward
down the long river
to the ocean.
A diet of fish
many tribes of peoples
many languages
many customs
And a long winter at the ocean's edge.
Now we are impatient to return
First to these welcoming people
the Nez Perce
who offer us friendship.
Then to wait endlessly
for summer enough
to survive the journey
through the terrifying mountains
once again.
