SILENCE OF CHANGE
NARRATOR
But the land theft did not end.
In a stroke of power over the Nimiipuu,
over Columbia River Indian peoples,
Celilo Falls was taken.
And the word spread like news of death
For it was death.
CHORUS
The tumbling falls -
crashing waters of Celilo
were to be silenced.
The gathering place, the history,
ceremony, celebration -
ten thousand years of the salmon, noc cox -
at Celilo Falls
was lost forever.
And at the moment
the waters
swallowed up this holy place
the spirit of the Nimiipuu reeled and fell away into the silence.
Now the winds and waters
whisper the story of Celilo Falls
while ghostly voices along river banks
wail from broken hearts.
NARRATOR
My people, what have we done -
to the Nimiipuu, to the salmon
to the harmony of nature?
What have we done when our need to control nature
is bigger than the thundering waters -
bigger it seems than God?
